Restore a laminated old photo

Lamination was a popular way to protect a document photo, and it quietly ruined many. The plastic yellows, bubbles and catches light. Leave the plastic alone. Photograph or scan it as it is, and the bot reduces glare, tint and wrinkles in the file.

Do not peel it

It is tempting to cut the lamination open with a knife. In most cases the plastic is bonded to the photo surface, and pulling it lifts the image with it. The file you scan is the safe copy. Once you have a restored image, you can reprint it and keep the laminated original in a sleeve. If the card has official details printed on it, treat them as sensitive and remove them before you share the picture online.

Color of the film

Old lamination often takes on a honey tint, which pushes skin toward orange and makes whites look cream. The bot subtracts that tone from the overall picture, but it can overshoot toward blue. Compare the result with a family snapshot taken in daylight. If the shift looks too cool, rerun and add 'warm natural skin tone, white shirt stays white'. Usually the second attempt lands on a balanced result.
