Restore a photo from a newspaper clipping

BeforeAfter
In short: Clippings carry halftone dots, ink bleed and yellow paper. Scan the clipping flat and the bot cleans the picture while keeping the faces.
- Where: the VisuMate bot in Telegram, no app or sign-up.
- Cost: 2 credits per image, 7 images free, then packs from 49 Telegram Stars.
- Time: 1 to 2 minutes per image, rerun with a new instruction at the same price.
When you need this
- The only photo of an event is a clipping from a local paper.
- The dots are visible and the face looks like a pattern.
- The paper is brown and the edges are brittle.
How to do it
- 1
Use the button on this page to open the bot in Telegram, then press Start. Your 15 free credits appear on first launch.
- 2
Send the scan or phone picture as a file (document) so Telegram does not compress it. In the caption write: newspaper photo with halftone dots, smooth the dots, keep the faces and the black and white look.
- 3
In 1-2 minutes the repaired photo arrives in the chat. Download it, compare it with the original and run again if a spot was missed.
Try it on your own photo: 7 images are free, no sign-up.
Make it in TelegramHalftone makes fine detail rare
Newspaper pictures are printed with dots of different sizes. Faces have only the detail that the dots allow. The AI smooths the pattern and estimates the details. The result is cleaner, but additional facial detail is a guess. For this reason compare the result to the clipping and do not treat it as a new portrait. A run takes 1-2 minutes and uses 2 credits, so trying a second version with a clearer caption is an easy step.
Scan tips
Lay the clipping flat under glass. Old newsprint is fragile and may crumble, so avoid pressing. Scan only the photo area with a little border. If the clipping has a caption, scan the whole item at a normal resolution to save the text. The caption text is often the only record of names and date. The first launch gives 15 free credits, which is enough for 7 images, so you can test the result on your own picture before buying anything.
Tips
- Scan at 1200 dpi to capture the dots, the AI needs to see the pattern.
- Crop the photo from the text before sending, or keep the caption in another scan.
- Faces from newspaper prints are low-detail, expect softness.
- Save the date and name of the newspaper in the file name.
Questions and answers
Will the dots disappear?
Mostly. A fine texture can remain.
Is it possible to colorize a newspaper photo?
Yes, but results are rougher because the detail is low.
Can I keep the caption?
Scan it separately.
How large will the result be?
Check the file size after the run.
