A hand tinted print is partly a painting, so its charm lies in the loose color. The bot should clean around it, not replace it with something sharp and modern. Ask to keep the painted style, and look at lips and cheeks at full size. If the color drifted outside the lines, request that the tint stays soft. You can also ask for a separate full colorization, then compare it with the authentic tint.
Fragile surfaces
The dyes sit on top of the print or are mixed into a thin varnish, and they flake easily. Never rub, spray or wet them. Move the print to a clean folder, photograph it once with even light and then restore the picture on screen. If you plan to display the original, ask a conservator about a mat and a frame.
