An autochrome holds a layer of starch grains dyed orange, green and violet. Light passing through the grains builds the picture. The result is soft, grainy and slightly dim, which is part of its charm. The bot corrects the overall cast and removes dust and scratches, though it keeps enough grain that the picture feels honest to its period and still looks like a glass plate.
Fragile glass
A glass plate can crack or lose its emulsion if you press on it. Store it upright in a padded box, away from heat and damp. Do not tape a broken plate. Will the colors be accurate?
They will be balanced and plausible. Early color is a process of its own, so some tints stay unusual.
Should I remove the grain?
Not fully. A light grain keeps the period feel. Ask for a gentle reduction.
