A negative needs light behind it. A tablet showing a plain white page works, as does a window on an overcast day. Place a dark card around the plate so no stray light creeps in, and hold the phone directly above. Uneven light makes the bot treat shadows as part of the image. Take two shots at different exposures and send the one where you can see both the bright sky and the dark clothing.
Broken plates
A cracked plate can be photographed in pieces and joined, but the edges rarely meet perfectly. Lay the pieces on a dark surface, shoot them together and let the bot handle the seam with a caption such as 'join the pieces, hide the crack lines, keep the faces intact'. Check faces near the break closely. For a plate with real historic value, contact a museum or an archive before you handle it any further.
Tips
- Use an even light panel and a black mask around the edge.
- Photograph the plate emulsion side down on the light.
- Avoid pressing hard, since old glass breaks.
- Store plates upright in separate paper sleeves.
