Revive a nineteenth century salt or albumen print
Salt and albumen prints from the 1850s to the 1890s were made on thin paper with an egg white coating. With age they turn yellow, lose their whites and craze into fine cracks. Send a photo of the print and the bot rebuilds the tonal range and calms the cracking.

Make it in TelegramWhy they age this way
Albumen is a protein layer that yellows and cracks as the paper beneath moves with the seasons. The image silver also fades toward brown and purple. The bot cannot know the true tones, so it rebuilds a balanced scale from what is left. The look of a nineteenth century portrait is warm, and you can ask for a neutral or a warm version.
Keep the object
A print of this age is an object as much as a picture. The mount, the studio stamp and any pencil note on the back tell you who made it and when. Photograph all of them and store the files together. Keep the original in an acid free enclosure, flat, in a cool dry room, and talk to a paper conservator before you attempt any physical cleaning.
Tips
- Photograph the mount and the back as well.
- Use indirect light to avoid reflections on the gloss.
- Tell the bot the approximate decade if you know it.
- Handle with clean dry hands or gloves.
