Local adjustments, one pass

A flat curve lifts the whole picture the same amount. Uneven fade needs different amounts in different places. The bot reads the image in regions and balances them against the strongest part, which usually shows the true tone. When the weak region has lost nearly all detail, there is little to lift, and the result is partly reconstruction. Keep the original scan next to it.

Why one side fades more

Light from a window, a framed print half covered by a mat or a stack of papers can cause patches. The pattern tells you something about the storage. Move the print to a dark folder. Then repeat the scan after the repair for a record. If the print is worth the cost, a conservator can say whether the fade is stable or still advancing.

Tips

Say which side faded most.
Scan at 600 dpi if you can, so pale areas keep detail.
Avoid auto contrast in the scanner software.
Check the seam in the sky or the wall first.

Can it fix a faded slide too?
