What can be rebuilt

Soot, smoke tint and light scorching are much easier than missing areas. When a face is partly burned, the bot has to guess, so treat that part as an artist's suggestion. Compare with other photos of the same person. If a face is gone, ask for a simple, plain fill instead of an invented detail. Be honest in the family notes about which parts are reconstructed.

Handling the original

Burned paper is fragile. Lift it by the edges, flat on a sheet of card, and do not rub the surface. A conservator can advise on valuable pieces. For most family photos, a careful phone picture and a restoration run is a practical rescue that gets the faces back onto the wall. Store the original flat, away from light and damp.
