Fix silvering on an old photograph
Silvering is a bluish metallic sheen that creeps into the darkest parts of an old black and white print, so a black coat looks like polished tin. It changes with the angle of the light, which makes scanning tricky. Try the angles, send the best one, and the bot evens out the tone.

Make it in TelegramWhat it is
Silvering happens when tiny silver particles migrate to the surface of the print over decades. The effect is a part of the image that moved, and it sits on top of nothing you can wipe away. That is why a simple brightness tweak cannot remove it. The bot looks at the surrounding tones and rebuilds smooth, deep blacks where the sheen sits. Results are best when the damage covers dark clothes and backgrounds, less so when it covers faces.
Scanning tips
Because silvering shifts with the angle, a flatbed scanner with a single bright lamp often shows it strongly. A softer, even light from a lightbox lid reduces it. Take a phone picture in diffused daylight as a test, and compare it to the scan. Use whichever has less haze. Save the other too, in case small facial details look clearer in the harsher version.
Tips
- Scan with the light coming from one side, straight-on light shows more.
- Try a second scan with the print turned a quarter step.
- Do not rub the surface. It is a chemical change.
- Mention the dark clothes in the caption.
Questions and answers
Can silvering be stopped?
Storage in a cool, dry, dark box slows the change. A conservator can advise on valuable prints.
Does it work on color prints?
Silvering belongs to black and white prints. Color prints have different problems.
What does it cost?
2 credits per image. New users get 15 free credits, so 7 images cost nothing. After that packs start at 129 Telegram Stars, about $2.6 and credits do not expire.

What the bot does not do
