Get a clearer picture from a microfilm reader screenshot
Libraries keep old newspapers on microfilm, and a photo from one is often the only trace of a person or a street. A snapshot of the reader screen is gray, noisy and crossed by lines. Send the image as a file and the bot cleans the noise and sharpens what can be read.

Make it in TelegramWhat microfilm gives you
Microfilm records a page as a small high contrast image, and the newspaper picture on it was a halftone to begin with. Two layers of limitation sit on top of each other. The bot cleans noise and builds a face from the tones that remain. Expect a readable likeness at best and not a studio portrait. A better source, such as the original print or a clippings file, is always worth asking for.
Document your source
A picture from a newspaper archive is worth little if you cannot say where it came from. Write the title, the date, the page and the reel in the file name and in your notes. The library may offer higher resolution scans or prints for a fee. Check the rules on reuse before you publish. The restored copy is a research aid and a keepsake for the family.
Tips
- Use the reader's own save or print function if it has one.
- Zoom the reader to the picture before you shoot.
- Write down the paper name, date and page number.
- Do not rely on small text without checking the source.
Questions and answers
Can the bot read the caption text?
It cleans the image so you can read it, though you should check names at full size.
Is a phone shot of a screen enough?
It works for a first try. A direct scan from the reader gives better results.
What does it cost?
2 credits per image. New users get 15 free credits, so 7 images cost nothing. After that packs start at 129 Telegram Stars, about $2.6 and credits do not expire.
Does the bot work in English?
Yes. It picks up your Telegram language on first launch. You can switch it any time with /lang.
What the bot does not do
- Does not print photos and does not retouch passport or ID photos.
- Does not promise a fixed pixel size. Check the result at full size before printing.
- Heavily damaged faces are reconstructed by AI and may not look like the person. Compare with another photo.
- Does not make video or animate the photo.
