Remove noise from an old photo

Old pictures carry film grain, scanner noise and speckle. The bot reduces the noise and keeps faces and texture, so the picture looks clean without turning waxy. Some grain gives an old photo its character, and you can decide how much to remove.

Noise, grain and damage

Film grain is the texture of the original emulsion. Scanner noise is added when the picture is captured by the scanner or the phone camera. Dust and scratches are physical marks. They look different and need different handling. The sharpening mode targets grain and noise together, while the restore mode targets marks. If a scan has both, repair the marks first, then reduce the noise.

Keeping skin and texture

Strong noise removal can smooth skin until it looks waxy and wipe out the weave of clothes. The bot is built to keep faces and fine texture, and it still helps to name that in the caption. After the run, zoom to full size on a cheek and a sleeve. If they look flat, rerun with a request to keep more grain. A little grain left in often looks more real.

Limits

Very heavy noise hides detail that cannot be brought back, and the AI will guess what was there. In faces, a guess can shift small features. The bot returns the image at a good resolution for screens and small prints and does not promise a fixed pixel size, so check the file at full size before printing. If you plan a frame, view it at the size you will hang it.

Tips

Questions and answers

Is grain the same as noise?

Close. Grain comes from film, noise from sensors or scanners. Both are treated in the sharpening mode.

Can I keep the film look?

Yes. Ask in the caption to keep some grain.

Does it remove dust specks?

The restore mode is better for dust and scratches.

Is the free try enough?

15 free credits give 7 images, enough for a few scans.

Will faces change?

They are meant to stay the same. Always compare with the original.
