Grease fills the tiny gaps between paper fibers, so light passes through the surface instead of bouncing back, and the area looks darker and slightly see-through. The bot reads this as an uneven tone layer and lifts it toward the brightness of the surrounding picture. Where oil has also dissolved the image itself, some detail is rebuilt from context, so look closely at eyes and mouths.
What the paper still needs
A digital cleanup does not remove the oil from the paper. Oil keeps spreading slowly and can attract dust. Photograph the print soon, then store the original flat in an acid-free sleeve away from kitchens. A conservator can advise on safe treatment for valuable pieces.
