Old paste and rubber cement turn yellow or brown and soak slowly into the paper. On the front this shows as a stain with soft edges, and sometimes as a ripple where the paper swelled. The bot treats the stain as a uneven tint layer and the ripple as light and shadow, then evens both out. Where glue has eaten the picture itself, the result is partly rebuilt from context.
Leave the album alone
A print glued down can be damaged by pulling it free. Photograph it in place, along with the page, and let a conservator decide whether to lift it.
