Restoration fills in what is missing, and the bot does this with believable detail. For a likeness that matters, such as a lost parent, tell the artist which parts are rebuilt. Eyes, the mouth and the shape of the nose carry the likeness. Compare the result with other pictures and with the memory of people who knew the person. The artist can then correct the details by eye.
What to give the painter
Send three files: the original scan, the restored version and, if possible, a version with color. Add a short note about eye color, hair and clothing from memory. Ask the artist about size and file format. A good reference saves them hours and the family a few rounds of changes. Keep the full resolution file and a printed copy for the artist to hold.
