Most of the work happens before the bot. Stand with your back to a plain dark curtain, so your own shape does not reflect in the glass. Hold the phone square to the case, and turn off the flash. Choose the angle where the image looks like a normal portrait, like a positive. If one angle has the face and another has the clothing, send both and combine your favorite pieces afterward.
Preserving the case
The decorative case, the velvet lining and the brass mat are part of the object's story. Take a separate picture of the open case from above, and keep it in your records. The bot will not know how the real case looks, so do not ask it to redraw the frame. Treat the restored portrait as one file and the case photo as another, and store both with a line about where the piece came from.

- Tilt the case until the image looks positive.

Is a handheld phone shot enough?
It can be, if the light is soft and the case is steady. A scanner is a poor fit for most cased images.
