If the picture was cut close to the edge, the crop should stop at the very edge instead of trimming into it. Compare the corners of the result with the scan to confirm that the faces and the horizon were not clipped.

A scan lid that does not close flat leaves a shadow along one side. Put a clean sheet of black or white paper over the print to even out the background, and keep the glass free of dust.
