Why flyers need empty space

People read the headline first and the picture second. If text lands on a busy part of the image, it becomes hard to read from a meter away. By asking for an empty band, you get a clean area for big type. Test by squinting at the result: the headline zone should look almost flat. Light text on a dark area or dark text on a pale one both work.

Good first uses

Bake sales, yard sales, a fitness class, a church supper, a lost-and-found notice, a school fundraiser. Keep the brief short and local. Print on plain paper first and pin it up to see how it reads from across the room. Fix the brief, not the print job, if something looks off. If you run a recurring event, keep the same style words and swap only the subject and the date each time.

Name the empty zone: top, bottom or left third.
One bold picture works better than a collage.
Pick two colors and a mood, such as cheerful or calm.
